Heriberto Fiorillo, a prominent Barranquilla-born writer, cultural journalist, screenwriter, and filmmaker, has passed away due to medical issues. According to Carlos Polo, press secretary for the International Carnival of the Arts, an event founded by Fiorillo 16 years ago, his death occurred on Monday night. The well-known journalist also served as the executive director of the La Cueva Cultural Foundation and held editorial positions at Cromos magazine and the daily EL HERALDO.

“He passed away peacefully despite significant medical complications, yet he remained engaged in all our activities from home, including providing input for the 16th edition of the International Carnival of the Arts,” Polo explained.

How Did Journalist Heriberto Fiorillo Pass Away?

Heriberto Fiorillo succumbed to medical issues. In addition to his journalistic pursuits, he was also a chronicler in New York, a filmmaker, presenter, and radio producer. Fiorillo, a Javeriana University in Bogotá graduate, established himself not only as a language researcher but also through numerous journalistic articles and the creation of scripts and texts for audiovisuals. His role at the Foundation for New Ibero-American Journalism involved leading journalistic narrative seminars.

After leaving journalism, Fiorillo enjoyed a successful career as a screenwriter, with his documentary film journey commencing in 1980 when he created and directed “Cine-revista,” a weekly 10-minute 35mm film magazine produced in Colombia and post-produced in New York and Caracas. In 2021, the Colombian Ministry of Culture honored him with the Medal of Cultural Merit for his contributions to bringing the arts closer to the public.
