Montage Kapalua Bay on the northwest coast of Maui is rolling out new leaders in its resort food and beverage departments.
Christopher Damskey was recently appointed as executive chef, responsible for the entire culinary footprint of the hotel including all restaurant outlets, banquets, in-residence dining and setting the stage for some pop-up events.
In fact, the second annual beer garden and Oktoberfest will be doing the oom-pah-pah from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 on the resort grounds.
Damskey has trained with some of the country’s great chefs including Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Charlie Trotter, Marcus Samuelsson and Alan Wong. He was most recently chef de cuisine of ULU Ocean Grill and Sushi Lounge at the Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island and was the chef at Alan Wong’s former Amasia on Maui before that.
“I’m really happy and excited to be back on Maui,” says Damskey. “Montage is such a beautiful property. It’s very similar to the Four Seasons but on a much smaller scale. I’ve always been a very hands-on chef and I will be able to do that here, and it’s a big reason I took this job.”
Robert Barrera joined the Montage team this summer as chef de cuisine of the signature Cane & Canoe.
Barrera came with extensive experience in several notable restaurants including Pineapple Grill, The Plantation House, Hula Grill, Duke’s Beach House as well as Merriman’s Kapalua — all on Maui before landing at Montage.
“I’ll be working with Chef Barrera rebuilding the team and doing training and creating special events and projects,” Damskey explains.
Kenneth Kwok is a 12-year veteran in food and beverage management at luxury resorts such as the Fairmont Orchid on Hawaii Island and the St. Regis Princeville on Kauai. He leads the front of house for Cane & Canoe and in-residence dining as new Director of Restaurants for Montage.
“We are thrilled to introduce these three talented gentlemen to our resort guests, residential owners and local customers,” exudes Anthony Freda, resort manager. “We are elevating our signature restaurant dining service, reinventing culinary offerings for weddings and celebrations, uplifting oceanside options at the renowned Cliff House, redefining in-residence dining and invigorating the Hana Hou Bar’s island-style vibe,” continues Freda.
Island residents are invited to experience these new menu items, changes and upgrades with a 25-percent discount now through November. Valid state ID is required.
