Reports indicate that two Forrest City police officers sustained gunshot wounds and a suspect was fatally shot inside a Walmart in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Lt. Eric Varner and Detective Eugene Watlington were shot in response to reports of a man making threats to people.

As the officers arrived at the scene, the man brandished a firearm and opened fire, injuring both of them.

Watlington sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital in Memphis where he underwent surgery, while Varner was taken to a hospital in Forrest City and was conscious enough to converse. He received medical treatment and was subsequently released.

The suspect expired at the store on Deaderick Road, and there were no civilian casualties reported in the incident.  . 

Although the suspect was reportedly familiar to the police, his identity has not been disclosed at the time of this report.

A spokesperson for Walmart stated that they are cognizant of the situation and are collaborating with the police department to assist in the investigation. 

The Walmart location in Arkansas will remain non-operational until further notice as the investigation persists.
