Former Olympic volleyball champion, Walewska Oliveira dies suddenly at 43


Walewska Oliveira, an Olympic gold medallist, passed away suddenly at the age of 43.

 

 


Oliveira was known for her incredible volleyball career, representing Brazil and achieving gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She also secured a bronze medal at Sydney in 2000 and participated in Athens in 2004.

She passed away in Sao Paulo, and the cause of her sudden death has not yet been made public.

 

 


Throughout her inspiring career, Oliveira aided Brazil in attaining a World Championship silver medal. She made significant contributions as her team made two World Cup finals.

 

 


The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) expressed deep sorrow, stating, “With sadness and immense regret, the CBV received the news of the death of Olympic champion Walewska on Thursday night.”

The CBV president, Radames Lattari, added, “Walewska was a special player, her career in the sport will forever be remembered and revered. At this difficult time, CBV sympathises with the family and friends of this great player.”

 

 


Oliveira retired from the sport in 2022 and upon announcing her decision, she expressed, “My career was beautiful. I have a lot to thank everyone, Praia Clube for ending my career here, for participating in this group.”

She added, “I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life.”

 

 


Oliveira represented 11 clubs in her career, with stints in Italy, Spain, Russia, and her homeland.

 

 


Praia Clube, Oliveira’s last team, expressed, “Brazilian volleyball and the sports community have lost a true legend, and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
