The Zamfara State government has given the go-ahead for the conversion of the state College of Agriculture and Animal Sciences, Bakura to a College of Agriculture and Technology, with renovation arrangements already concluded. This announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Yau Haruna Gamji, following his defense of the ministry’s 2024 fiscal year budget before the House of Assembly standing committee on appropriation. The statement was issued by the ministry’s information and public relations officer, Bashir Abashiya.
According to the commissioner, the upgrading of the college aims to build on the aspirations of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, who established the institution to provide middle manpower for agricultural extension services in the region. He also mentioned that the upgrading will enable the College to benefit from the Tetfund and other donors’ interventions by improving infrastructure and capacity building for the staff of the institution.
Furthermore, Yau Haruna highlighted that the State Government has approved the re-accreditation of existing courses and accreditation of technical disciplines the institution is planning to introduce. This step is a prerequisite for the college’s transition from Monotechnic to Polytechnic as required by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
