John Mcenroe leads an eventful life, in his prime he was a professional tennis player and after his retirement he took up music and played with a band. Here’s everything you need to know about one of America’s top athletes, his family and his career.

Young age

John, the retired and sassy American tennis player was born on the 16th day of February 1959 in Wiesbaden, Hessen, West Germany. He was raised by his parents, John Patrick McEnroe Sr. and Kay Tresham. His father is the son of an Irish immigrant; who at one time was assigned to the United States Air Force.

John McEnroe was nursed in Douglaston, Queens, New York City. He started playing tennis at the age of eight at nearby club Douglaston. At the age of nine, he began attending the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association and began participating in regional tournaments. Later, he participated in national junior tournaments. At the age of twelve, after being ranked seventh in his age group, he became a member of the Port Washington Tennis Academy located in Long Island, New York. McEnroe was a pupil of Trinity School. He graduated from the school in 1977.

Career

The career of this tennis maestro was a success, as he managed to win the mixed doubles at Roland-Garros with the resplendent Mary Carillo. He then appeared in the qualifying tournament and the main draw at Wimbledon. At Wimbledon he was beaten in the semi-finals by Jimmy Connors in four sets. This is one of the best performances by a qualifier at a Grand Slam tournament and the record performance by an amateur in the open arena.

After the 1977 Wimbledon, coach Dick Goulda recruited McEnroe and enrolled him at the prestigious Stanford University. In 1978, the Stanford team was led by John McEnroe to the NCAA championship. In the competition, he won the NCAA singles title. Later, in 1978, John McEnroe became a member of the ATP tour, where he signed his first endorsement contract with Sergio Tacchini. Things are going so well for him, McEnroe went on to lose in the semi-finals at the US Grandslam Open, to Connors. However, in the same year, he won five titles, including his first Master Grand Prix; defeat Arthur Ashe in straight sets. Even though his success was late, John was able to push himself. He was ranked fourth player of the year.

Retirement

John McEnroe has retired from playing tennis and is pursuing his post-tour goal of becoming an active musician. He eventually learned to play the guitar with the help of his buddies like Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Allen. After divorcing his wife, he created a music group called The Johny Smyth Band, of which he was the singer and guitarist. He started writing his own songs and was invited to perform at some important events. His band embarked on a tour of about two years before ending it in 1997, just before completing their album.

Following McEnroe’s unprecedented participation, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also appointed as a sports commentator at the BBC, Wimbledon, UK. The tennis star is also the commentator for ATP tennis tournaments in the United States on the following networks: NBS, CBS, USA and ESPN.

In 2007, John McEnroe was featured on the NBC channel 30 Rocks. He was also the host of a major game show called ‘Gold Case’. On that show, he loudly articulated his famous phrase “You can’t be serious!” Calm your enthusiasm. In 2009, he was featured again on 30 Rock, in the episode “Gavin Volure” where the protagonist, a strange hermit-like character, invited him to dinner with him because he was able to bridge the gap between the world of collecting and selling art.

John McEnroe tied the nuptial knot with TatumO’Neal, the delightful daughter of Oscar-winning actress Ryan O’Neal, from 1986 to 1994. The couple have three children together, Kevin, Sean and Emily. After dissolving their years of marriage, the duo were granted joint custody of their children. McEnroe was subsequently granted sole custody of O’Neal’s drug-related affairs. In 1997, John McEnroe later married Patty Smyth, a renowned rock singer, with whom he has two daughters, Anna and Ava.

Philanthropy

McEnroe is known to be a philanthropist. There was a particular period when the tennis star co-chaired the City Parks Tennis charity benefit. This event is an annual fundraiser organized by the City Parks Foundation. The significance of this charity event is to raise critical funds for New York City’s largest municipal youth tennis program. He tries to accumulate contemporary American arts and creates a gallery in Manhattan in 1993.
